Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance

As a Veteran, if you received or are in receipt of "Service Connected Benefits" in the past two years, you may be eligible to apply for and receive S-DVI.  The insurance is provided to a Veteran who has received a new service connected disability and applies for the insurance within 2 years of receiving the new disability rate.  S-DVI is open to veterans separated from the service on or after April 25, 1951, who receive a service-connected disability rating of 0% or greater.

Eligibility Requirements for S-DVI Insurance ("RH"): a veteran must have:

   (1) Receivedd other than a dishonorable discharge.

   (2) Been realeased from active duty after April 25, 1951.

   (3) Received a rating for a new service-connected disability within the last 2 years.

Remember:  The veteran does not need to have a 100% rating to be eligible.  Veterans who receive a new rating of even 0% are eligible for the coverage.  The veteran must apply for the insurance within two years from the date they are notified that service-connection has been established for a disability.

PREMIUMS charged for S-DVI coverage are:

  • Based on the rates a healthy individual would have been charged                                           when the program began in 1951.

  • Waived for totally disabled veterans (40% of S-DVI policies).

A veteran may also be eligible for an additional supplemental $20,000 S-DVI if:

They are eligible for a waiver of premiums due to total disability.

They apply for the coverage within one year from notice of the grant of waiver.

     They are under age 65.
